Landing in a new country and figuring out how to actually get to your hotel is rarely anyone’s favorite part of travel, and Morocco’s airports each have their own quirks. Here’s what to expect at the four most common entry points, and how to avoid the usual headaches.
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK)
Marrakech’s airport sits unusually close to the city, only about 6 kilometers from the medina, so the ride in is short. Official red taxis wait outside arrivals, but fares aren’t metered for airport runs, so agreeing on a price before getting in is essential, it’s one of the most common places travelers get overcharged in the entire country. A city bus (Line 19) also runs between the airport and the city center for a fraction of the cost, though it’s a less practical option with luggage. A prearranged private transfer removes the haggling entirely and is worth it for the price difference alone, especially after a long flight.
Fes-Saïss Airport (FEZ)
Fes’s airport is about 15 kilometers from the city center, roughly a 20 to 25 minute drive. Like Marrakech, official taxis are available but unmetered for this route, so confirm the price upfront. There’s no practical public bus connection for most travelers, which makes a taxi or private transfer the realistic options. Because the medina itself is car-free, any transfer will drop you at the nearest accessible point, often with a short walk or porter-assisted stretch to reach a riad deeper inside.
Casablanca Mohammed V Airport (CMN)
Casablanca is the exception here: the airport has its own train station with direct service into the city center (Casa Voyageurs station), making it one of the easiest and cheapest airport connections in the country, with trains running regularly throughout the day. Taxis are also available for those who prefer door-to-door service, particularly useful if you’re continuing straight on to Rabat or another city rather than stopping in Casablanca itself.
Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG)
Tangier’s airport sits about 15 kilometers from the city center. Taxis are the standard option, and as with the other airports, confirming a fixed price before departure avoids any surprises on arrival. Given Tangier’s role as a gateway to both Chefchaouen and the ferry crossings to Spain, many travelers arriving here are continuing onward the same day, so timing a transfer with your onward travel plans is worth considering in advance.
The Pattern Across All Four
A few things hold true at every Moroccan airport: official taxi fares for airport routes are very rarely metered, so always agree on a price before the car moves, and avoid anyone approaching you inside the terminal before you reach the official taxi queue or arrivals area, these are almost always overpriced unofficial offers. Having cash in dirhams on hand helps, since not every driver takes cards.
