2 Day Tour from Marrakech to Mhamid El Ghizlane and Erg Chegaga

Mhamid El Ghizlane sits at the very end of the Draa Valley, where the road runs out and the Sahara begins. Beyond the town, the Erg Chegaga dunes rise to over 100 meters, making them some of the tallest and most spectacular dunes in Morocco. Unlike the more visited Erg Chebbi near Merzouga in the east, Erg Chegaga sees far fewer travelers and carries a quieter and more raw quality that makes the desert experience here feel genuinely remote. This 2-day private tour from Marrakech takes you all the way to the heart of the Erg Chegaga dunes for an overnight in the desert before returning to Marrakech.

Overview

Day one departs Marrakech early and heads south across the High Atlas Mountains, stopping at the iconic Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah before continuing through Ouarzazate and down the full length of the magnificent Draa Valley to Mhamid El Ghizlane. From there, a 4×4 vehicle takes you deeper into the desert to the Erg Chegaga dunes for a night in a desert camp under the stars. Day two begins with a Sahara sunrise before the return journey to Marrakech via the Draa Valley and the High Atlas, arriving in the early evening.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech to Erg Chegaga via Ait Ben Haddou and Draa Valley

Early morning departure from Marrakech, heading east across the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest paved road in North Africa at approximately 2,260 meters above sea level. The mountain road winds through spectacular switchbacks with sweeping views of rocky peaks, deep valleys, and small Berber villages perched on the hillsides. Stop along the way for panoramic photographs before beginning the descent toward the pre-Saharan plains of the south.

The first major stop of the day is the legendary Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic fortified villages in Morocco. This ancient ksar, built entirely from red earthen clay, has appeared in productions including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Mummy. Your guide will walk you through the narrow alleyways and take you up to the top granary for sweeping views of the surrounding desert landscape.

Continue to Ouarzazate for a lunch stop before heading south on the road that descends into the Draa Valley, one of the longest and most beautiful river valleys in Morocco. For over 200 kilometers the road follows the Draa River through a seemingly endless corridor of date palms, ancient mud-brick kasbahs, Berber villages, and desert oases. The landscape feels increasingly remote and timeless the further south you travel. Stop at key viewpoints and villages along the valley before arriving in Mhamid El Ghizlane in the late afternoon.

From Mhamid, transfer into a 4×4 vehicle for the final leg of the journey into the desert. The paved road ends at Mhamid and the track south toward Erg Chegaga crosses open desert plains and low dune fields for approximately 50 kilometers before the towering dunes of Erg Chegaga rise dramatically on the horizon. Arrive at the desert camp in time for the sunset, climb the nearest dune for sweeping views over the vast dune sea as the light fades, and return to camp for a warm welcome of mint tea and Berber bread. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner under an extraordinary desert sky, far from any roads, towns, or lights, and fall asleep to the complete silence of the Sahara.

Meals included: Dinner and Breakfast

Day 2: Erg Chegaga to Marrakech via Draa Valley +

Rise before dawn to witness the Sahara sunrise over the Erg Chegaga dunes, one of the most peaceful and photogenic moments the desert offers. The first light of day catches the tops of the dunes while the valleys between them are still in deep shadow, creating a landscape that shifts through shades of gold, orange, and pink before the sun is fully up. After a camp breakfast, pack up and transfer back by 4×4 to Mhamid El Ghizlane.

From Mhamid, begin the long return drive north through the Draa Valley toward Marrakech. The morning hours cast a completely different light on the valley than the afternoon of the day before, the low sun throwing long shadows across the palm groves and illuminating the earthen kasbahs in warm tones. Stop along the way at any spots you want to revisit or photograph more carefully, and enjoy a lunch stop in one of the valley towns before continuing north.

Cross back over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and descend toward Marrakech, arriving in the city in the early evening. Your Navigate Morocco driver will drop you off at your accommodation, bringing your 2-day Erg Chegaga desert adventure to a close.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is this a private tour?

Yes. This is a fully private tour operated exclusively for you and your travel companions by Navigate Morocco. You will have a dedicated vehicle and driver-guide for both days and will not share with any othergroup.

How far is Erg Chegaga from Marrakech?

The drive from Marrakech to Mhamid El Ghizlane is approximately 400 kilometers, around 6 to 7 hours including the mountain crossing and stops. From Mhamid, the 4×4 track to Erg Chegaga adds another hour and a half to two hours across open desert. An early departure from Marrakech of around 7am is essential to arrive at the camp with time to enjoy the sunset.

What makes Erg Chegaga different from Erg Chebbi near Merzouga?

Erg Chegaga is larger, more remote, and significantly less visited than Erg Chebbi. The dunes rise to over 100 meters and stretch for around 40 kilometers, making it one of the most expansive dune fields in Morocco. Because it requires a 4×4 track from Mhamid to reach, it attracts far fewer organized tour groups and the experience here feels genuinely more isolated and raw. Travelers who have already visited Merzouga often describe Erg Chegaga as the more authentic and memorable desert experience.

What is the desert camp at Erg Chegaga like?

The camp at Erg Chegaga is a traditional Berber-style tent camp set among the dunes, with comfortable sleeping arrangements, shared or private bathroom facilities, and a communal dining area. The camp is simple by design, the experience is about the desert itself rather than hotel-style comfort, and that is exactly what makes it special. Navigate Morocco selects the best available camp based on the time of year and your preferences.

Is a 4×4 vehicle included for the Erg Chegaga section?

Yes. The 4×4 transfer from Mhamid El Ghizlane to the Erg Chegaga desert camp and back is included in the tour price. The track from Mhamid to the camp is not accessible by standard vehicle and requires a proper 4×4 with an experienced desert driver.

Can I do a camel ride at Erg Chegaga?

Yes. Camel rides at Erg Chegaga are available locally at an additional cost. A sunset camel trek from the camp into the dunes is a popular option and can be arranged in advance with Navigate Morocco or on the day at the camp.

What is the best time of year to visit Erg Chegaga?

The best months are October to April when temperatures are pleasant in the desert. Summer in the Mhamid region can be extremely hot as it is further south and more exposed than Merzouga. The spring months of March to May are particularly beautiful when the Draa Valley palm groves are green and the desert light is at its most golden.

Can this tour be extended?

Yes. Navigate Morocco can extend this into a 3 or 4-day tour with extra nights in the desert, additional stops along the Draa Valley, or a combination with the Dades Valley and Ait Ben Haddou for a more comprehensive southern Morocco itinerary. Just let us know and we will build the right route for you.
