Day Trip from Tangier to Cap Spartel and Hercules Cave

This is the closest and most geographically dramatic day trip from Tangier, covering just 14 kilometers but arriving at a point that has fascinated travelers for centuries. Cap Spartel is where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. Standing at the lighthouse on the headland, you can see both bodies of water at once, the Atlantic to your left and the Mediterranean to your right, with the coast of Spain visible across the strait on a clear day. It is one of those places that earns its reputation.

Overview

Cap Spartel sits at the northwestern tip of the African continent, at the precise point where the two great seas converge. The lighthouse here was built in the 19th century and is still operational. A few kilometers further along the coast, the Hercules Cave is one of the most visited natural landmarks in northern Morocco, a sea cave steeped in mythology whose ocean-facing opening is said to resemble the outline of the African continent. Together the two sites make for a short but memorable half-day from Tangier that can easily be combined with a visit to the city itself.

Itinerary

Departure from Tangier mid-morning, heading west along the coast road through the upmarket residential neighborhoods that line the hillside above the strait. The drive to Cap Spartel takes around 20 minutes and the road itself offers excellent views of the Strait of Gibraltar with the Spanish coast clearly visible across the water on most days.

Arrive at Cap Spartel and walk out to the lighthouse at the tip of the headland. The convergence of the two seas here is visible in the color and texture of the water, the greener Mediterranean on one side and the deeper blue-grey Atlantic on the other, the currents meeting in a visible line offshore. The viewpoint is extraordinary and the sense of standing at a genuine geographical boundary is one that photographs struggle to convey.

Continue a short distance south along the coast to the Hercules Cave, a large natural sea cave that has been inhabited since prehistoric times and that features in ancient mythology as the place where Hercules rested after completing his legendary labors. The cave opens toward the sea in an aperture that, when viewed from inside, forms the unmistakable outline of the African continent. Lunch is taken at a seafood restaurant on the nearby coast before a relaxed stop at Achakar Beach and the return to Tangier.
