Itinerary

Day 1: Tangier to Chefchaouen

Departure from Tangier in the morning, heading south through the city and into the Rif Mountains. Tangier itself is one of Morocco’s most fascinating cities, shaped by centuries of trade, diplomacy, and cultural exchange at the point where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet, and where Africa and Europe feel closer than anywhere else on earth. Depending on your departure time, there may be a brief stop to enjoy the view from the Corniche or a short walk through the old medina and Kasbah before hitting the road south.

The drive from Tangier to Chefchaouen takes approximately two hours through the Rif Mountains, the landscape climbing steadily through forested hillsides, Berber villages, and mountain scenery before arriving in Chefchaouen. Arrive late morning or early afternoon and check into your traditional riad in the medina. The rest of the day is entirely yours to explore the Blue City at your own pace.

Chefchaouen is unlike anywhere else in Morocco. The medina is a maze of narrow alleyways, staircases, and doorways painted in every shade of blue imaginable, creating a landscape of extraordinary beauty that draws travelers and photographers from around the world. Wander freely through the blue-washed streets, visit Outa el Hammam Square at the heart of the medina, browse the artisan shops selling handwoven wool textiles and leather goods, and take the walk up to the Spanish Mosque above the town for a panoramic view of the blue rooftops and the Rif peaks on all sides. The town is at its most beautiful in the late afternoon when the day visitors have departed and the streets take on a quieter and more photogenic quality. Dinner independently at one of the rooftop restaurants overlooking the medina.

Day 2: Chefchaouen to Fes with Full-Day Guided Medina Tour +

After breakfast in Chefchaouen, enjoy a final short morning walk through the blue alleyways before departing south toward Fes. The drive from Chefchaouen to Fes takes approximately two and a half hours through the Rif Mountains and across the fertile Saiss Plain. Arrive in Fes late morning and check into your traditional riad in the heart of the old medina.

After settling in, your knowledgeable local guide will meet you to begin the full guided cultural tour of Fes el-Bali, the ancient walled medina of Fes and one of the most complete and best-preserved medieval cities in the world. With over nine thousand alleyways, centuries-old monuments, and artisan workshops that have been operating for generations, Fes genuinely rewards a guided visit more than almost any city in Morocco. A great guide does not just show you where to go. He opens doors you would never find on your own and brings the history of the city to life in a way that no guidebook can replicate.

Walk through the labyrinthine alleyways to visit Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 AD and recognized as the world’s oldest continuously operating university. Explore the Bou Inania Madrasa, a stunning 14th-century theological school of extraordinary decorative craftsmanship featuring intricate zellige tilework, elaborately carved stucco walls, and ornate cedar wood ceilings. Head to the world-famous Chouara Tanneries, where leather has been dyed using the same natural pigments and traditional methods for over a thousand years. View the vivid circular dye vats from the rooftop terraces of the surrounding leather shops, one of the most visually striking experiences in all of Morocco. Round off the tour with a walk through the artisan workshops where coppersmiths, weavers, potters, and ceramicists practice their crafts as they have for generations.

Enjoy some free time in the late afternoon to browse the souk, sit in a traditional cafe, or simply wander through a part of the medina your guide has introduced you to. Return to your riad in the evening for a final overnight in Fes. Dinner independently at one of the excellent restaurants in and around the medina.

Day 3: Fes to Casablanca via Meknes +

After breakfast, depart Fes and head west toward Meknes, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities and a destination often appreciated for its calmer and less crowded atmosphere compared to the more visited imperial cities. Just 60 kilometers from Fes, Meknes was the capital of Morocco under Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century and the city still reflects the ambition of that era through its monumental architecture and grand fortified walls.

On arrival in Meknes, enjoy a brief guided visit to the city’s most important landmarks. Begin at Bab Mansour, considered one of the finest and most beautifully decorated gates in all of Morocco, famous for its impressive scale and elegant green and white tilework. Continue to Lahdim Square, the lively heart of the old city where local life, cafes, and the entrance to the souks converge. If time allows, a quick stop at the Heri es-Souani, the vast royal granaries and stables built to house 12,000 horses, is a worthwhile addition. The scale of the structure, with its long vaulted corridors and ancient water system, consistently surprises visitors who were not expecting it.

After the Meknes visit and a lunch stop, continue south and west toward Casablanca. The drive takes approximately two and a half to three hours through the rolling agricultural plains of central Morocco. Arrive in Casablanca in the early to mid-afternoon. Your Navigate Morocco driver will drop you off at your hotel, accommodation, or Mohammed V International Airport depending on your onward travel plans, bringing your 3-day tour from Tangier to Casablanca to a smooth and memorable close.
