Your driver-guide picks you up early in the morning from your hotel in Agadir or from Agadir Al Massira Airport. The road heads inland, first to Taroudant, a walled city often called the “Grandmother of Marrakech” for its red ramparts and quieter souks. There is time for a short stop to see the ramparts and, if you like, to visit an argan oil cooperative on the outskirts of town.
From Taroudant the route climbs gently through Taliouine, the heart of Morocco’s saffron growing region, before crossing the Anti-Atlas Mountains on a scenic mountain road with wide views over valleys and small Berber villages. You will stop along the way for photos, tea, and a proper lunch break in a local restaurant (lunch is at your own cost).
By late afternoon you arrive in Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the Sahara and home of the Atlas Film Studios, where many major films and series have been shot. Check in to your hotel, relax by the pool if there is time, and enjoy dinner and your first overnight of the trip.
After breakfast in Ouarzazate, drive east through the palm groves of Skoura and on to Kelaat M’Gouna, known as the Valley of Roses for its rose water cooperatives. Continue into the Dades Gorge to see the “Monkey Fingers” rock formations, a striking set of eroded cliffs that give the valley its name among travelers.
From there the road continues to Tinghir and into the Todra Gorge, where sheer canyon walls rise up on either side of a narrow river bed, in places only a few meters apart. There is time to get out and walk along the gorge floor before continuing across the flat hamada plains toward Erfoud and Rissani, the old caravan town that was once a gateway for trans Saharan trade.
In the late afternoon you reach Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Leave the vehicle here and transfer by 4×4 into the dunes for a sunset camel ride, watching the sand change color as the sun goes down. Dinner is served around the fire at the desert camp, with Berber drumming and music under the stars, and you spend your first night in the camp.
Wake up early for sunrise over the dunes, then head back to the camp for breakfast. Afterward, get ready for a full day exploring the desert region by 4×4. Your driver takes you across the hamada and the dunes to visit a Berber nomad family, the black volcanic rock formations of the desert, and fossil workshops where trilobites and ammonites are cleaned and polished by local craftsmen.
You will also stop in Khamlia, a small village known for its Gnawa music, descended from West African communities who settled here generations ago, for a short informal music session. Depending on the season, there may be a stop at Dayet Srji, a seasonal desert lake that attracts pink flamingos and other migratory birds. Optional activities such as sandboarding and quad biking can be arranged locally during the day.
After a full day out in the 4×4, you head to a comfortable hotel in the Merzouga area for a shower, dinner, and your second night, this time in a real bed rather than the camp.
After breakfast, leave the desert behind and drive back west, retracing part of the route through Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, with time to stop again for photos if you missed anything on the way out. Continue to the Dades Valley, known for its kasbahs, rose gardens, and dramatic rock formations along the Dades River.
Arrive at your hotel in the Dades Valley in the afternoon, with time to relax and enjoy the mountain views before dinner. Overnight at a hotel with views over the Dades Gorge.
Drive back through Ouarzazate, passing the Atlas Film Studios again, then continue to Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO listed fortified village that has appeared in numerous films and television series. Take a guided walk through the ksar’s narrow lanes and earthen towers, and climb to the top for views over the Ounila Valley (entrance fee payable locally).
From Ait Ben Haddou, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, Morocco’s highest year round road at 2,260 meters, with hairpin bends and sweeping mountain views. Stop at one of the roadside viewpoints for tea and to buy geodes and minerals from local vendors before descending toward Marrakech.
Arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon, check in to your riad in the medina, and enjoy the evening at your own pace, with Jemaa el-Fna square just a short walk away.
Spend the day exploring Marrakech with a licensed local guide. Visit the Koutoubia Mosque and its gardens, the Bahia Palace with its carved cedar ceilings, and the Saadian Tombs, rediscovered only in the early twentieth century. Continue to the Majorelle Garden, the vivid blue villa and botanical garden once owned by Yves Saint Laurent.
In the afternoon, walk through the souks of the medina, where alleys are lined with stalls selling spices, leather goods, lanterns, carpets, and metalwork. Your guide can help you find the right craftsmen and negotiate prices if you want to shop. As evening falls, return to Jemaa el-Fna square to see the food stalls, storytellers, and musicians set up for the night, and try a meal from one of the open air food stands if you like.
Second overnight in Marrakech.
Leave Marrakech and drive west toward the Atlantic coast, passing through argan tree country along the way. Stop at a women’s argan oil cooperative to see how the oil is pressed by hand, from cracking the nuts to grinding the paste, and to see the tree climbing goats that the region is known for.
Arrive in Essaouira by early afternoon. This walled fishing port, formerly known as Mogador, has a laid back atmosphere very different from Marrakech. Spend the rest of the day exploring the medina’s narrow streets and art galleries, the busy fishing port with its blue boats, and the long sandy beach that stretches south of town, popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers.
Overnight in Essaouira.
After a final breakfast by the coast, drive south along the Atlantic road back to Agadir, with views of the ocean for much of the way. Depending on your onward plans, you can be dropped off at your hotel in Agadir or directly at Agadir Al Massira Airport for your departure flight.
