Tangier is the easiest way into Morocco from Europe. Fast ferries cross the Strait of Gibraltar from Tarifa in about an hour, and Tangier’s airport has direct flights from across Europe. From here, the route south takes in the Rif Mountains, the imperial cities and, if you have the time, the Sahara.
From Tangier, the road climbs into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, the Blue City, about 2.5 hours away. The next stops are the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the holy town of Moulay Idriss and Fes. Desert routes then cross the Middle Atlas via Ifrane and Midelt to the Merzouga dunes, and return west through the Todra and Dades gorges and Ait Ben Haddou to Marrakech.
