Stand on the roof of North Africa. This private 2-day trek takes you from Marrakech to Imlil, up the Mizane Valley to the Toubkal Refuge, and to the 4,167-meter summit of Jebel Toubkal at sunrise, with a licensed mountain guide and mules to carry your bags.
This private Mount Toubkal trek takes you to the roof of North Africa in two days, with a licensed mountain guide.
Jebel Toubkal is the highest mountain in North Africa, and one of the most rewarding summits you can reach without technical climbing. In the summer months, the route is a long, steep hike rather than a climb. Fit walkers without mountaineering experience can reach the top in two days. Day one is a steady walk from Imlil to the refuge at about 3,200 meters. Day two starts before dawn for the summit and is followed by the long descent back to Imlil and the drive to Marrakech.
It’s a demanding trek: expect around 5 to 6 hours of walking on the first day and 9 to 10 hours on the second. If you want the mountains without the summit, try our Imlil and Toubkal National Park day trip.
Jebel Toubkal, at 4,167 meters, is the highest mountain in North Africa. Imlil is the main gateway to Toubkal National Park.
The High Atlas is cooler than Marrakech all year. From December to March, expect snow on the peaks and cold mornings. In summer, the mountains are a welcome escape from the city heat.

How much does the 2-day Toubkal trek cost?
Our private 2-day Mount Toubkal trek from Marrakech starts from $320 per person, based on 2 hikers. That includes transfers, a licensed mountain guide, a mule for your bags, the night at the refuge and meals on the trail. Larger groups pay less per person. Winter ascents need extra equipment and are quoted separately.
How fit do I need to be to climb Toubkal?
You need to be comfortable walking uphill for many hours. The second day includes a steep climb of about 1,000 meters and a descent of more than 2,400 meters. Regular hikers usually manage it well.
Do I need a guide to climb Toubkal?
Yes. Moroccan rules require hikers in the Toubkal area to be accompanied by a licensed mountain guide, which is included in this trek.
What is the best time to climb Toubkal?
From June to October the route is usually free of snow. From December to April there is snow and ice, which calls for crampons, an ice axe and winter experience. We can plan winter ascents on request.
Will I get altitude sickness?
Some people feel headaches or tiredness above 3,000 meters. The pace is steady and your guide watches for symptoms. Drinking plenty of water helps.
What is the Toubkal Refuge like?
A stone mountain hut with shared dormitories, basic shared bathrooms and a dining room. Bring a sleeping bag or rent one.
Can I do the trek in 3 days instead of 2?
Yes. A 3-day version adds a night in a village guesthouse and makes the pace much easier. Ask us for details.
What should I pack?
Hiking boots, warm layers, a waterproof jacket, a hat and gloves (it’s cold on the summit even in summer), a headlamp, sunscreen and a daypack with water.
