Overview

Erg Chigaga is the most remote dune sea in Morocco, about 60 kilometers beyond the end of the road at M’Hamid El Ghizlane. There are no villages, no electricity lines and almost no light at night. This Erg Chigaga wellness retreat gives you three nights there, with practice at sunrise and sunset and long, silent days in between.

The journey follows the Draa Valley, the longest river valley in Morocco, lined with palm groves and old kasbahs. From M’Hamid you cross the open desert by 4×4 to the camp, and on the way back you rest in a kasbah with a pool before returning to Marrakech.

This Erg Chigaga wellness retreat suits travelers who want true silence and wild landscapes, and it is also designed for yoga teachers who want to host a group deep in the Sahara.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech to the Draa Valley via Ait Ben Haddou

−

Your driver-guide picks you up in the morning from your riad or from Marrakech Menara Airport. Cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at an easy pace and visit Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO listed fortified village. Continue past Ouarzazate to Agdz, at the head of the Draa Valley. Arrive at a kasbah guesthouse among the palms, take a short walk through the oasis and enjoy dinner at the kasbah.

Day 2: The Draa Valley to Erg Chigaga by 4x4

+

Follow the Draa Valley south through Zagora and its long ribbon of palm groves to M’Hamid El Ghizlane, the last village before the open desert. From here, a 4×4 carries you across the stony desert and dry lake beds to the dunes of Erg Chigaga. Arrive at the camp in the afternoon, settle into your tent and climb a dune for a guided sunset meditation. Dinner is served at the camp, followed by the fire, drums and a sky full of stars.

Day 3: Sunrise Practice and a Silent Day in the Dunes

+

Wake before dawn for sunrise yoga or meditation on the dunes, with mats and rugs set out for you. After breakfast the day is free: rest in the shade, read, journal or walk into the dunes. Lunch is served at the camp. In the late afternoon, gather again for a sunset practice before dinner and a quiet night at the camp.

Day 4: A Nomad Picnic in Erg Chigaga

+

After sunrise practice and breakfast, walk slowly to the highest dunes of Erg Chigaga, which rise to about 300 meters, for a view over the whole sea of sand. Lunch is a simple nomad picnic in the shade of the dunes. Spend the afternoon resting, then keep the evening for silence: a sunset sit, dinner and stargazing far from any light. The night is at the camp.

Day 5: Erg Chigaga to Zagora via M'Hamid and Tamegroute

+

Enjoy a last sunrise in the dunes, then return by 4×4 to M’Hamid and drive north along the Draa Valley. Stop in Tamegroute to see its green pottery workshops and its old library of Islamic manuscripts. Spend the night in a kasbah with a pool near Zagora, where you can swim, rest or book an optional hammam and argan massage before dinner.

Day 6: Zagora to Marrakech (End of Retreat)

+

After breakfast, drive north through the Draa Valley and over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass back to Marrakech, with stops along the way. You arrive in the late afternoon, and we drop you at your riad or at the airport.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can yoga teachers bring their own group?

Yes, and we would love to host you. You lead the practice, and we take care of the transport, the 4×4 transfers, the camp, the meals and the timing of each day around your sessions. Contact us with your group size and dates for a private group offer.

Is a yoga teacher included?

No. Private travelers can follow their own practice, and we provide the mats, the rugs and quiet time at sunrise and sunset. If you want a teacher, bring your own or ask us and we will help.

How is Erg Chigaga different from Merzouga?

Erg Chigaga is far more remote. There is no road to the dunes, so you arrive by 4×4 across the open desert, and you see very few other people. Merzouga is easier to reach and has more comfort. Both are beautiful for a wellness retreat.

Do I need yoga experience?

No. You can join the meditation, practice at your own level or simply rest. Every activity is optional.

What is the best time of year for this retreat?

March to May and late September to November. Winter days are lovely but nights in the desert are cold, and summer is very hot, so we plan desert time around sunrise and sunset.
