This 2-day Marrakech to Zagora desert tour is the quickest way to spend a night in the desert from Marrakech.
Zagora is the closest real desert to Marrakech that works as an overnight trip. The drive is about 7 hours each way with stops, compared with two full days to reach Merzouga. Day one crosses the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, stops at the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou and follows the Draa Valley to Zagora. There you ride a camel into the dunes and spend the night in a desert camp. Day two returns through Ouarzazate and the High Atlas to Marrakech.
A word of honesty: the dunes near Zagora are smaller than the big sand seas of Merzouga or Erg Chigaga. If tall golden dunes are your priority and you have three days, choose our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour instead. If you have two days, Zagora gives you the desert night, the camel ride and some of the best mountain and oasis scenery in the country.
Zagora sits in the Draa Valley, and its famous sign reads “Tombouctou 52 jours”, the old camel-caravan time to Timbuktu. The fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved earthen ksars in southern Morocco. The Draa River feeds one of the longest chains of palm oases in Morocco.
The best time for this trip is March to May or September to November. From June to August, desert afternoons can pass 40°C, and from December to February, nights in the Sahara drop close to freezing, so bring a warm layer.

Early morning departure from Marrakech toward the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs through Berber villages and walnut groves to the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters, with photo stops along the way. On the southern side, the landscape changes to red earth and bare mountains as you descend to Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village made famous by films such as Gladiator and series such as Game of Thrones. Take time to walk up through the ksar to the old granary at the top for views over the valley.
After lunch, continue through Ouarzazate and over the Anti-Atlas to the town of Agdz, where the Draa Valley begins. The road follows the river past palm groves, mud-brick kasbahs and small villages for about 100 km to Zagora. In the late afternoon, meet your camels at the edge of the dunes and ride into the desert as the sun goes down. Dinner is served at the camp, followed by an evening around the fire under a sky full of stars.

Wake early for sunrise over the dunes, then ride back by camel and have breakfast. The return journey follows the Draa Valley north to Agdz and on to Ouarzazate, with stops at viewpoints over the palm groves. After a lunch break in Ouarzazate, cross back over the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and arrive in Marrakech in the early evening. Drop-off at your riad, hotel or Marrakech Menara Airport.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to Zagora?
About 360 km, or 7 to 8 hours with photo and lunch stops. The road crosses the High Atlas, so we leave early to reach the dunes before sunset.
Is Zagora the real Sahara?
Zagora is in the Draa Valley, on the edge of the Sahara. The dunes near Zagora are smaller than those of Merzouga or Erg Chigaga, but you still get the desert landscape, a camel ride and a night in a camp.
Zagora or Merzouga: which should I choose?
If you only have 2 days, Zagora is the realistic choice. If you have 3 days or more, Merzouga has taller dunes and is worth the extra day of driving.

What is the desert camp like?
