The dune field lies about 50 km beyond the last village of M’hamid El Ghizlane, with no paved road, so the final stretch is a 4×4 drive across stony plains and sand. Camps are scattered and few, and at night the silence is complete.
The route is long, but it’s one of the most varied in Morocco: the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, the palm groves of the Draa Valley, the pottery village of Tamegroute, the dunes of Erg Chigaga and the mirage-like flats of Lake Iriki. The Erg Chigaga dune field lies beyond the end of the paved road, which keeps it far quieter than Merzouga. Tamegroute is known for its green-glazed pottery and an old Koranic library. M’hamid El Ghizlane is the last village before the dunes.
The best time for this trip is March to May or September to November. From June to August, desert afternoons can pass 40°C, and from December to February, nights in the Sahara drop close to freezing, so bring a warm layer.

Leave Marrakech in the morning and cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m), stopping at viewpoints and Berber villages. Visit Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified village that has served as a film set for dozens of productions, and walk to the top of the ksar for the view. After lunch, continue through Ouarzazate and over the Anti-Atlas to Agdz, then follow the Draa Valley’s palm groves and kasbahs south to Zagora. Dinner and overnight at a riad or kasbah hotel.

After breakfast, drive south to Tamegroute, known for its green-glazed pottery and an old Koranic library with centuries-old manuscripts. Continue through Tagounite to M’hamid El Ghizlane, the last village before the dunes. Here you switch to a 4×4 for the off-road crossing to Erg Chigaga, around 50 km across hard plains, small dunes and oasis patches. Arrive in time to climb a dune for sunset, with an optional camel ride. Dinner at the camp, followed by music around the fire and a night under the desert stars.

Wake up for sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, the 4×4 heads west across the dry bed of Lake Iriki, a vast flat plain where mirages are common in the heat, to the town of Foum Zguid. From there, the road continues north through Tazenakht, known for its carpets, to Ouarzazate, then back over the High Atlas to Marrakech, arriving in the evening. It’s a long travel day, with regular stops along the way.

How remote is Erg Chigaga?
Very. The dunes are about 50 km off-road from M’hamid El Ghizlane, with no paved road, which is why the last stretch is done by 4×4. There are far fewer camps and visitors than in Merzouga.
Erg Chigaga or Merzouga: which is better?
Merzouga has taller dunes and easier access. Erg Chigaga is larger, wilder and quieter. Choose Erg Chigaga if you want solitude and an adventurous off-road crossing.
How long is the drive each day?
Days 1 and 3 are long travel days of around 7 to 9 hours with stops. Day 2 is shorter, with the 4×4 crossing in the afternoon.
Is the 4×4 crossing comfortable?
Yes. It’s a bumpy but safe drive with an experienced desert driver, and it takes around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on conditions.
What is the camp like?
Camps at Erg Chigaga are tented, with beds, blankets and shared or private bathrooms depending on the camp level you choose.
When is the best time to visit Erg Chigaga?
October to April is the most comfortable. From December to February, nights are cold, and in summer the heat is intense in the middle of the day.
Can the tour end somewhere other than Marrakech?
