The Route: Marrakech to Merzouga

Most routes leave Marrakech over the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m), stop at the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, and spend the first night in the Dades Valley. The next day passes the Todra Gorge and the palm oases of the Tafilalet before reaching the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, just in time for a sunset camel ride and a night in a desert camp.

Best Time for a Sahara Tour from Marrakech

The most comfortable months are March to May and September to November: warm days, cool nights and clear skies. From June to August, afternoons in the desert can pass 40°C, so we plan early starts and long midday breaks. From December to February, days are sunny but nights in the Sahara can drop close to freezing, and the Tizi n’Tichka Pass sometimes sees snow. Desert camps provide heavy blankets, but bring a warm layer.
