Departure from Marrakech mid-morning, heading south through the city outskirts and into the foothills of the High Atlas. The road follows the Ourika River almost immediately, with the valley narrowing gradually as you drive deeper into the mountains. The lower valley is green and agricultural, with small farms, olive groves, and herb gardens lining the riverbanks.
The first stop is typically a traditional Berber village where your guide will introduce you to a local family and give you a genuine sense of daily life in the mountains. If your visit falls on a Monday, the weekly souk at Tnine Ourika is one of the most worthwhile short detours available on this route, a genuinely local market where farmers, traders, and craftspeople from the surrounding villages gather.
Continue up the valley to Setti Fatma, the last village accessible by road. A short hike from the village follows the river upstream to the first of seven waterfalls, a 20 to 30 minute walk with the sound of the river alongside the whole way. Lunch is taken at one of the simple Berber restaurants built over the river on wooden platforms. The afternoon is free to explore the village or sit by the river before the return drive to Marrakech.

How far is Ourika Valley from Marrakech?
The start of the valley is approximately 30 kilometers south of Marrakech, about 45 minutes by road. Setti Fatma at the top of the valley is around 65 kilometers from the city, approximately one hour to one hour fifteen minutes.
Is the hike to the waterfall difficult?
The hike to the first waterfall is moderate and takes around 20 to 30 minutes each way on an uneven rocky path alongside the river. It is manageable for most fitness levels. Continuing to the higher waterfalls is more demanding and adds significant time.
What is the Monday souk?
The weekly market at Tnine Ourika takes place every Monday and brings together farmers, traders, and craftspeople from the surrounding Atlas villages. It is not aimed at tourists and is a genuinely local experience.
