What Is Merzouga?
Merzouga is a village on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a field of sand dunes about 28 km long near the Algerian border. The tallest dunes rise around 150 meters. This is the Sahara most people picture: golden waves of sand, camel caravans and camps tucked between the dunes.
Getting there is part of the adventure. From Marrakech, the road crosses the High Atlas, passes the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou and runs through the Dades and Todra gorges. Most people split the drive with a night in the Dades Valley.
