Is There a Sahara Day Trip from Agadir?
Not to the real dunes. Some tours in Agadir advertise a “Sahara day trip”, but they usually visit rocky desert areas, small coastal dunes or oases nearby. They can be fun, but they are not the Sahara sand seas you see in photos. If you want a camel ride into big dunes and a night in a desert camp, plan for several days.
Which Desert to Visit from Agadir
Merzouga: The Tallest Dunes
Merzouga has the famous Erg Chebbi dunes, up to about 150 meters high. It is the furthest from Agadir, but the drive passes the Dades and Todra gorges, some of the best scenery in the country.
Zagora: The Closest Desert Camp
Zagora is the nearest desert camp area to Agadir. The dunes are small, but you get the Draa Valley palm groves, a camel ride and a desert night. It suits a 3-day trip.
Erg Chigaga: Wild and Remote

The Best Route: Sahara Desert from Agadir via Taroudant
Our favorite route heads east through the Souss Valley and over the Anti-Atlas. It shows a side of Morocco most visitors never see.
- Taroudant: a market town wrapped in some of the best-preserved earthen walls in Morocco.
- Taliouine: the heart of Moroccan saffron country, with cooperatives you can visit.
- Ouarzazate: the gateway to the desert, near the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou.
- Dades and Todra gorges: red canyons and winding mountain roads on the way to Merzouga.
What to Expect on a Sahara Desert Trip from Agadir
The first day climbs away from the coast into the Souss Valley. Argan trees dot the plain, and the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas rise on either side. Taroudant is a good first stop. Its souks are calmer than Marrakech’s and easy to explore.
After Taliouine, the landscape turns dry and rocky. Villages of mud-brick houses cling to the hills. By the time you reach Ouarzazate, you are at the gateway to the desert. The next day, the road runs through the Valley of Roses and the gorges before the dunes of Merzouga appear on the horizon.
The desert night is the highlight. You ride a camel into the dunes at sunset, eat dinner at camp and watch the stars. Wake up early for sunrise. It’s worth it.

You can rent a car in Agadir and drive yourself. The main roads are good. But you will spend long days behind the wheel and need to book camps and camel rides on your own. - Ending in Marrakech saves a full day of driving. Fly home from there, or take the 3-hour motorway back to Agadir.
- Pack a warm jacket. Agadir is mild, but desert nights can be cold from November to March.
- Start early on driving days to enjoy the stops without rushing.
