Fes to Merzouga: Route, Driving Time and Best Tours

Going from Fes to Merzouga is the fastest way to reach the big Sahara dunes in Morocco. Merzouga is closer to Fes than to Marrakech, and the road crosses cedar forests, mountain passes and long palm valleys on the way.

The Route From Fes to Merzouga, Stop by Stop

The drive from Fes to Merzouga heads south across the Middle Atlas, then down into the desert. These are the stops we make on our tours:

Ifrane

A small alpine town about an hour from Fes, with stone chalets and parks. It is a good coffee stop, and it can snow here in winter.

Azrou cedar forest

Tall Atlas cedars and wild Barbary macaque monkeys by the road. Please watch them from a distance and do not feed them.

Midelt and the High Atlas pass

Midelt sits between the Middle and High Atlas, with views of snowy peaks in winter and spring. Many drivers stop here for lunch.

Ziz Valley and Errachidia

The road drops through the Ziz Gorges into a long valley of date palms. The viewpoint over the palm groves is one of the best photo stops of the day.

Erfoud and Rissani

Erfoud is known for fossils. Rissani has a big local market three days a week. From here, it is a short drive to the dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga.

How Many Days Do You Need for Fes to Merzouga?

2 days: Fes to Merzouga and back

Our 2-day Sahara tour from Fes drives to Merzouga on day 1, with a sunset camel ride and a night in a desert camp. Day 2 is the drive back to Fes. It works, but you spend most of both days on the road. From $270 per person.

3 days: more time in the desert

Our 3-day Sahara tour from Fes adds a full day around Merzouga. You can visit nomad families, hear Gnawa music in Khamlia and explore by 4×4. The second night is in a hotel at the edge of the dunes. From $370 per person.

4 days: Fes to Merzouga, ending in Marrakech

If you are heading on to Marrakech, don’t drive back to Fes. Our 4-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech continues west through the Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley and Ait Ben Haddou. From $470 per person.

Fes to Merzouga by Bus, Car or Private Tour

Bus: CTM and Supratours both run buses from Fes towards Merzouga. It is the cheapest option, but you miss the stops, and you still need to book a camp and a camel ride.

Private tour: a driver-guide, stops where you want, and the camp and camel ride included. It costs more, but for couples and families it is the easiest way to go from Fes to Merzouga.

Best Time to Go From Fes to Merzouga

Fes to Merzouga or Marrakech to Merzouga?

From Fes, Merzouga is about 470 km away. From Marrakech, it is about 560 km, and you need at least 3 days. So if you are already in Fes, it is the easier starting point.
