The Khamlia Gnawa village is a small community on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, a short drive from Merzouga. It is one of the few places in the Sahara where you can hear Gnawa music played live by the people who keep the tradition alive. Most visitors only see the dunes, and they miss it.
This guide explains what the Khamlia Gnawa village is, what the music performance looks like, how long it lasts, how tipping works, and how to fit a visit into your Sahara trip.

What Is the Khamlia Gnawa Village?
Khamlia is a village near Merzouga, close to the dunes of Erg Chebbi. It is known for its Gnawa community. The Gnawa are a Moroccan brotherhood of musicians whose traditions have roots in sub-Saharan Africa, and their music mixes spiritual songs, rhythm and trance.
Gnawa music is recognized by UNESCO. In 2019, it was added to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In Khamlia, that heritage is not a show for a festival stage. It is part of daily life in the village.
What to Expect at the Khamlia Gnawa Village
A visit is simple and personal. You sit with the musicians and listen to them play in a small space, close enough to see their hands and hear every beat.

The performance can last up to 20 minutes. That is long enough to hear several songs and to feel the rhythm, and short enough to fit into a day of sightseeing around Merzouga. The group plays traditional instruments, such as the guembri, a three-string bass lute, and iron castanets called krakebs, and they sing in call and response.
Do not rush it. Sit, listen, and let the music build. If the musicians invite you to clap or join the rhythm, take part.
Tips for the Khamlia Gnawa Village Musicians
The musicians are paid through tips, not through a ticket price. Tipping is the way you pay for the performance and thank the group for their time.
Bring small notes in dirhams, and give your tip at the end, to the group. There is no fixed amount, and a fair tip is the one that matches what you enjoyed. For general tipping rules across Morocco, read our guide to tipping in Morocco.
How to Visit the Khamlia Gnawa Village
The easiest way to visit is with a guide who knows the musicians. A Gnawa performance is included in our day tour of the Merzouga area, so you do not need to arrange it yourself. The day tour also covers other places around Merzouga, and it works well on the free day of a longer Sahara trip.
If you stay in the desert for the night, plan the visit in the daytime and keep the evening for the camp. Our guide to the 3 or 4 day desert tour from Marrakech shows how to fit Merzouga into your route. If you travel from Fes, read our guide to Fes to Merzouga.
Respect and Etiquette
Treat the visit as you would treat a visit to someone’s home. Ask before you take photos or videos of the musicians, and respect their answer. Dress modestly, turn your phone to silent, and do not talk during the songs.
The music has a spiritual side for many Gnawa. Listen with respect, even if you do not know the songs.
What to Bring
Bring a few small notes for the tip, a scarf for sun and wind, water, and sunglasses. Our list of what to pack for the Sahara covers the rest.
Other Merzouga Activities to Combine
A visit fits well with a camel trek at sunset or a ride in the dunes. If you like fast rides, read our guide to quad biking in Merzouga. If you are still choosing a desert area, compare Erg Chigaga and Merzouga.
