Merzouga vs Zagora is the choice most travelers face when they want a night in the Sahara from Marrakech. Merzouga has the biggest dunes and a longer drive. Zagora is closer, greener and easier to fit into two days. This guide compares the dunes, the drive, the camps, the price and the best season, then says which desert suits which traveler.
Merzouga vs Zagora: The Short Answer
Choose Merzouga if you want tall orange dunes, sandboarding, quad biking and have at least three days. Choose Zagora if you have two days, want a lower price and like palm groves and mud-brick kasbahs on the road. Both are real Sahara, but the dunes at Merzouga are much bigger.
There is also a third option beyond Zagora: Erg Chigaga, a remote dune field reached by 4×4 from M’Hamid. It sits between the two in effort, and we cover it below.
Merzouga vs Zagora: The Dunes
Merzouga sits at the edge of Erg Chebbi, where the dunes rise to about 150 meters. They are smooth, orange and steep, which is why this is the place for sandboarding and quad biking.
Around Zagora, the desert is stonier and the dunes are smaller and more scattered. The closest dune field is near Tinfou, about 20 kilometers south of town. It is a gentle place for a sunset camel ride, but not a place to climb a dune for an hour. The Draa Valley, which feeds the town, adds palm groves and old kasbahs that Merzouga does not have.

Merzouga vs Zagora: Drive Time From Marrakech
Zagora is about 360 kilometers from Marrakech, roughly 7 hours of driving plus stops. The route crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters, passes Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, then follows the Draa River south through Agdz. Our 2-day Zagora desert tour covers it in two days.
Merzouga is about 560 kilometers away, which takes 8 to 10 hours without stops. That is why our 3-day Marrakech to the Sahara tour splits the drive with a night in the Dades Valley. Two days from Marrakech is too short for Merzouga. If you start in Fes, read Fes to Merzouga instead.
Merzouga vs Zagora: Camps and Nights
On the Zagora tour you ride a camel at sunset into the dunes, eat dinner at the camp, and sleep one night near Zagora. A luxury camp with a private bathroom is available for an extra cost.
In Merzouga, all our tours use a luxury desert camp, and a standard camp is arranged on request. For what the night is really like, read a night in a Sahara desert camp. The 3-day tour gives you one night in the Dades Valley and one in the camp.
Merzouga vs Zagora: Price
Our private 2-day Zagora tour starts from $230 per person, based on two travelers. The 3-day Merzouga tour starts from $360 per person on the same basis. The gap is mostly one extra day and the longer drive. Larger groups pay less per person, and prices change with season and camp level.
Merzouga vs Zagora: Which Is Better for You?
Merzouga vs Zagora for First-Time Visitors
Most first-time visitors want the postcard: huge dunes, a long camel caravan and a camp in the middle of them. That is Merzouga. If it fits your dates, the 3 or 4 day desert tour guide helps you choose the length.
Merzouga vs Zagora for Short Trips
With only two days, Zagora is the realistic choice. You leave Marrakech in the morning, see Ait Ben Haddou on the way, ride into the dunes at sunset and return the next evening.
Merzouga vs Zagora for Activities
Merzouga wins here. Sandboarding, quad biking and the Gnawa village of Khamlia are all minutes from the camps. Around Zagora the offer is smaller: the camel ride, the valley and the nearby village of Tamegroute.
A Third Option: Erg Chigaga Beyond Zagora
Beyond Zagora, the road continues about 95 kilometers to M’Hamid El Ghizlane. From there, a 4×4 crosses roughly 50 kilometers of open desert to Erg Chigaga, where some dunes rise more than 50 meters. It is the quietest of the three and feels the most remote.
Our 3-day Erg Chigaga tour starts from $395 per person, based on two travelers. To compare it with Merzouga in detail, read Erg Chigaga vs Merzouga.

Merzouga vs Zagora: Best Time to Go
