Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga: this is the choice almost every traveler faces when planning a Sahara trip in Morocco. Both are real sand seas, both give you a night in a desert camp under the stars, and both are far from the city noise. The difference is in the journey, the crowd and the feeling. This guide compares Erg Chebbi near Merzouga with Erg Chigaga near M’Hamid El Ghizlane so you can pick with confidence.
Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga: The Short Answer
Choose Erg Chebbi if you want the classic Sahara with taller dunes, an easy paved road, many camps to choose from and activities close by. Choose Erg Chigaga if you want a wilder, quieter desert, a long off-road drive and a very dark sky. For a quick overview you can also read our basic guide to Erg Chigaga vs Merzouga, and this page goes deeper into the real differences.
Getting There: Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga by Road
Erg Chebbi is the easier of the two. The road to Merzouga is paved all the way, and the camps are easy to reach. If you are coming from the north, our guide to Fes to Merzouga shows the route, and our article on the drive from Marrakech to the Sahara explains what to expect.
Erg Chigaga is about 56 km southwest of M’Hamid El Ghizlane, and there is no paved road to the dunes. The trip follows the Draa Valley to M’Hamid, then continues by 4×4 for about one and a half to two hours off-road. Some Chigaga trips also cross the dry lake of Iriki toward Foum Zguid. It is a real adventure, but it needs more time.

The Dunes: Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga Landscape
Erg Chebbi is a compact sand sea about 28 km long, and its dunes are the tallest of the two, reaching about 150 m. Erg Chigaga has lower dunes, but the sand sea is larger and feels endless once you are inside it.
Camps and Crowds at Erg Chebbi
Merzouga has dozens of camps, from simple to luxury, so you can choose your budget. The advantage is choice and comfort. The disadvantage is that on a busy day you may see other groups on the same dune. To plan the night, read about a night in a Sahara desert camp.
Camps and Silence at Erg Chigaga
Only a handful of camps are spread widely across Erg Chigaga, so the desert feels empty and silent. The sky is very dark, which makes it one of the best places in Morocco to see the Milky Way. If stars matter most to you, compare it with our guide to stargazing in Merzouga.
