Zagora Morocco is the last big town before the desert proper, and it is a calmer, greener way to reach the Sahara than Merzouga. It sits in the Draa Valley, surrounded by palm groves, with the village of Tamegroute, small dunes and a famous sign pointing to Timbuktu. This guide covers what to see, how to get there, the best time to go and how a night in the desert fits.
Zagora Morocco: The Short Answer
Zagora is a good choice if you have two days, want a lower price and like palm groves and mud-brick kasbahs. It is about 360 km from Marrakech, roughly 7 hours of driving plus stops. Most visitors stay only one night, according to Journey Beyond Travel. Our private 2-day Zagora tour starts from $230 per person, based on two travelers, and our comparison of Merzouga vs Zagora explains when to choose each desert.
Zagora Morocco: Where It Is and How to Get There
Zagora lies in the Draa Valley in southern Morocco. By road from Marrakech, the route crosses the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters, passes Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, then follows the Draa River south through Agdz. Read our guides to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate for the stops on the way. Wikivoyage lists a bus from Marrakech taking about 8 hours, and a collective taxi from Ouarzazate, so check current timetables.

Things to Do in Zagora Morocco
Walk the Palm Grove and the Draa River in Zagora Morocco
Family-owned gardens with date palms stretch for miles between the town and the river. The area grows over 30 date varieties, harvested from September to November, says Journey Beyond Travel. The Draa River is about 1,100 km long, and it is controlled by a dam in Ouarzazate, so water reaches Zagora only when the dam is opened.
The Timbuktu Sign
A sign at the western end of town claims Timbuktu is 52 days away by camel. Zagora was a stop on the historic salt caravan route, and the painting has been replaced several times. It is a quick photo stop near the roundabout where the road splits toward M’Hamid and the airport.
The Sunday and Wednesday Souk
A large market operates every Sunday and Wednesday just outside the city center, with an attached flea market, and a date market runs during the autumn harvest. Bring small notes, and read our guide to cash in Morocco.
Tamegroute: Library and Green Pottery Near Zagora Morocco
Tamegroute is a village about 20 km south of Zagora. Sources give figures from about 18 to 22 km, and the paved drive takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Its Sufi zawiya was the center of the Nasiriyya order, and the library holds several thousand old manuscripts on subjects from the Quran to medicine, astronomy and law. Wikipedia says viewing the books requires a permit, and books may only be handled inside the library. Sud Est Maroc advises confirming access in Zagora before you go, and notes that photographing manuscripts may be restricted.
The village is also known for irregular green glazed pottery, made by shaping clay on the wheel, drying, glazing and firing it in traditional kilns. Common pieces include bowls, plates, cups and tiles, and smaller pieces are easier to carry. Plan about 1.5 to 2.5 hours, and a weekly souk is held on Saturdays, where pottery is sold.

Tinfou Dunes and the Desert Around Zagora Morocco
Around Zagora the desert is stonier, and the dunes are smaller and more scattered than at Merzouga. The closest dune field is near Tinfou, about 20 km south of town. It is a gentle place for a sunset camel ride, but not for climbing a dune for an hour. On our Zagora tour you ride a camel at sunset into the dunes, eat dinner at the camp and sleep one night near Zagora. A luxury camp with a private bathroom is available for an extra cost.

Beyond Zagora Morocco: M’Hamid and Erg Chigaga
Beyond Zagora the road continues about 95 km to M’Hamid. From there a 4×4 crosses roughly 50 km of open desert to Erg Chigaga, where some dunes rise more than 50 meters. It is the quietest and most remote of the options. Read Erg Chigaga vs Merzouga and Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga. Our 3-day Erg Chigaga tour starts from $395 per person, based on two travelers.
