Private vs Shared: Why the Morocco Desert Tour Cost Differs
Shared group tours from Marrakech to Merzouga are cheaper. Some operators sell 3-day shared trips from about €95 per person, in minibuses carrying up to 17 travelers.
A private tour costs more, but you get a different trip:
- Your own pace: stop for photos, a mint tea or a walk whenever you want.
- No fixed schedule: pickup from your riad or the airport at a time that suits you.
- Better camps: shared tours often use large camps with basic tents.
- Your own guide: questions get answered, and the route can change if the weather does.
For couples and families, a private tour is often better value than it first looks. With 4 or more travelers, the price per person gets close to a shared trip.
How Distance Changes the Morocco Desert Tour Cost
The Sahara is far from the big cities. Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, and the drive takes two days with stops. Read what the drive is really like.

- Zagora (1 night): the cheapest overnight option, with smaller dunes.
- Merzouga and Erg Chebbi: the tall golden dunes most people picture. At least 3 days from Marrakech.

Extra Costs on Top of the Morocco Desert Tour Cost
These are the costs most travelers forget when they compare the Morocco desert tour cost of different companies:
- Lunches: roughly $8 to $15 per person in roadside restaurants.
- Entrance fees: the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou itself is free, but houses and small museums inside charge a few dollars.
- Local guides: an optional guide in Ait Ben Haddou or the Todra Gorge costs a few euros.
- Activities: quad biking in the Erg Chebbi dunes starts at around €35 per hour. Sandboarding at the camp is usually free.
- Drinks and snacks: water and soft drinks cost more at the camp than in town.
- Tips: for your driver-guide and the camp team, at your own discretion.

Prices for the vehicle and guide stay the same all year. Camps and riads can cost more in peak periods, such as spring, autumn and the Christmas and New Year holidays. Summer is quieter, but desert afternoons pass 40°C. Check the best time to visit Morocco before you book.
How to Lower Your Morocco Desert Tour Cost
- Book directly with a local company: booking platforms add a commission to the price.
- Travel as a group: sharing the vehicle with 4 to 6 people lowers the cost per person.
- Choose the right length: 3 days is the minimum for Merzouga from Marrakech; 4 days is more relaxed.
