Ait Ben Haddou at a glance

According to Wikipedia, the ksar sits on a hill beside the Ounila River in Ouarzazate Province, and was inscribed by UNESCO in 1987 under criteria iv and v. The listed core area is 3.03 hectares with a 16.32 hectare buffer zone. UNESCO describes it as a group of earthen buildings surrounded by high walls, a traditional pre-Saharan habitat, with houses clustered inside defensive walls reinforced by corner towers. Some houses are modest, while others resemble small urban castles with brick-decorated upper sections.

Wikipedia says the site has been fortified since the 11th century, in the Almoravid period, though no current buildings are believed to predate the 17th century. It lay on a trans-Saharan trade route, linked through the Tizi n’Tichka pass with Marrakech and the Draa Valley. Tamdaght, a nearby kasbah and ksar, lies to the north.

How the ksar is built

Wikipedia says the buildings use rammed earth, adobe, clay brick and wood. Taller buildings use rammed earth up to the first floor and lighter adobe above, and the defensive wall has corner towers and a gate. Notable buildings include a mosque, a caravanserai, several kasbahs, the Marabout of Sidi Ali or Amer, and a ruined fortified granary, an agadir, on the hilltop, though the page flags the agadir claim as needing more citations.

The page adds that the ksar was significantly restored in modern times, partly due to film use and its UNESCO listing, and that a pedestrian bridge completed in 2011 links it to the modern village. It also says the ksar is sparsely inhabited by several families, with most locals now living in the modern village across the river.

Visiting the ksar

Sud Est Maroc, a travel site whose page is dated 2026, says the ksar is about 30 km from Ouarzazate, roughly 40 minutes by road, and about 180 km from Marrakech, roughly 3.5 to 4 hours of driving. The final approach is 7 km on the P1506 from Tabourahte, reached via the N9. It suggests allowing one to three hours and visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and says admission to the ksar is free, though some private houses and cultural spaces charge for entry. You cross by the pedestrian bridge or by a path through the gardens, and there is parking in the modern village.

The same page says the lanes and the summit climb are steep and uneven with little shade, so wear comfortable footwear. It lists the Maison de l’Oralité, a restored residence showing regional oral traditions and Amazigh carpet-making, and the Tawesna restaurant, run by a women’s cooperative in a garden near the entrance. It also advises hiring a guide for context on the village’s organisation and history.

Wikipedia says the September 2023 earthquake damaged the site, causing cracks and partial collapses with a risk of further collapse. We could not confirm which parts are currently open or restored, so ask your guide or the local authorities before you go.
