Merzouga and Erg Chebbi
Merzouga is a village on the western edge of Erg Chebbi, a dune field about 28 km long near the Algerian border. The highest dunes reach around 150 meters, so it has the most dramatic sand scenery in Morocco. Erg Chigaga lies about 56 km south-west of M’hamid El Ghizlane, the last village at the end of the road. The dunes are lower than Erg Chebbi’s, but the sand sea is larger and feels endless. There is no paved road. You cross stony plains, dry riverbeds and small dunes by 4×4, which is an adventure in itself.
Only a handful of camps operate here, and they are spread out. At night, you may not see another light. On the way out, many routes cross the dry bed of Lake Iriki toward Foum Zguid, where mirages shimmer in the heat.

A Night in the Dunes: Erg Chigaga vs Merzouga
In Merzouga, you usually ride a camel from the edge of the dunes to your camp at sunset. The ride takes about an hour. After dinner, the camp staff play drums around the fire. You can climb the dune behind the camp for the sunrise before riding back to breakfast.
