Things to Do in Merzouga: Dunes, Camel Rides and Beyond

The best things to do in Merzouga all happen at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, in the far south-east of Morocco. You can climb the dunes, go sandboarding, ride a camel at sunset, sleep in a desert camp and watch the stars. Nearby, there is Gnawa music, a lively market town and a seasonal lake. This guide covers every option, how long to stay and when to go.

Things to Do in Merzouga: The Quick List

If you only have one night, the core plan is simple: a camel ride at sunset, dinner and music at the camp, stargazing and a sunrise walk on the dunes. With a second day, add sandboarding, quad biking or a visit to the Gnawa village of Khamlia. With a third, add the market town of Rissani and the lake of Dayet Srji.

Things to Do in Merzouga on the Dunes

Climb the Erg Chebbi Dunes

The dunes rise to about 150 meters, and the nearest ones can be climbed in under an hour. The sand is soft, so the climb is slow. The best light is early morning and late afternoon, when the temperature is also kinder. Walk barefoot or in light shoes, as explained in our guide on what to wear in the Sahara desert.

Sandboarding: One of the Best Things to Do in Merzouga

Sandboarding is the easiest activity to try. You climb a dune, strap your feet onto a board and ride down the slope. No experience is needed. The full guide to sandboarding in Merzouga covers boards, safety and the best time of day.

ATV, Quad, Buggy and Dirt Bike Rides

Among the things to do in Merzouga, riding an ATV (a quad), a buggy or a dirt bike is the fastest way to cross the dunes. In one hour you cover ground that would take a camel half a day. A single quad is the classic choice. You drive it yourself, it is easy to learn, and it suits most people. A double quad is cheaper per person for a couple.

A buggy is the most comfortable option, good for families and for sunset photos. A dirt bike is for riders who have used a motorbike before. It is faster and lighter, and a professional guide leads the ride. The team gives you the uniform and the helmet.

Starting prices are about 400 dirhams per hour for a single quad, 600 for a double quad, and 1,200 for a buggy or a guided dirt bike. Always agree what is included before you start. Sunrise and sunset are the best times, because the light is soft and the sand is cooler. If one hour feels short, ask for a full-day ride across the whole Merzouga area.

Good to know: Always agree what is included before you start any ride.

Safety depends on the team. Ask whether a guide rides with the group, whether a vehicle follows behind, and whether helmets are included. For prices, rules and what to wear, read the full guide to quad biking in Merzouga.

A 4×4 Trip to a Nomad Family

A 4×4 can take you off the main track to nomad tents, where families still live in the desert. A visit is a chance to learn how they live. To understand what that life is like, read a day in the life of a Berber nomad.

Things to Do in Merzouga at Sunset and Night

Camel Ride at Sunset: Among the Top Things to Do in Merzouga

The classic plan is a camel caravan into the dunes as the sun goes down, ending at your camp. The light turns the dunes from gold to red, and the heat drops fast. Ride with a scarf in your bag, because the evening cools quickly.

Dinner and Music at the Camp

Dinner is served at the camp, often followed by Berber drumming around the fire. Our tours include dinner under the stars and music around the campfire. What the camps are like, from luxury to standard, is explained in a night in a Sahara desert camp.

Stargazing: One of the Quietest Things to Do in Merzouga

Far from city lights, the sky is dark and full of stars. A new moon gives the darkest sky, while a full moon lights the dunes so brightly that you can walk without a torch. Bring a warm jacket, because sitting still in the cold makes it feel colder.

Sunrise on the Dunes

Many travelers climb a dune before dawn to watch the sunrise. It is cold, so dress in layers and bring a head torch for the climb. Breakfast usually follows back at the camp.

Things to Do in Merzouga Beyond the Dunes

Khamlia and Gnawa Music

Khamlia is a village a short drive from the camps, where the community has preserved Gnawa music for generations. The performance lasts up to about 20 minutes, with the guembri bass lute, drums and iron castanets. Read about visiting the Khamlia Gnawa village and the story behind Gnawa music in Khamlia before you go.

Rissani Souk and Market

Rissani is the nearest sizable town to Erg Chebbi, about 45 minutes from the dunes. Its souk is especially lively on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, and it is known for leather and goat-skin trading. The town also became a major trans-Saharan trade city in the 14th century. For the heritage side, see our guide for Black American travelers in Morocco.

Dayet Srji Lake

Dayet Srji is a seasonal salt lake a short drive from Merzouga. After rain, it can attract flamingos, usually in spring. In summer it dries into a cracked plain. Ask your guide whether it holds water before you go.
