Todra Gorge Morocco is a limestone canyon in the eastern High Atlas, near the town of Tinghir, where red walls rise on both sides of a narrow road and a small river. The Todra Gorge (also spelled Todgha) is one of the great stops between Marrakech and the Sahara. This Todra Gorge Morocco guide covers how big it is, what to do there, how to get there and how it fits with the Dades Valley, so you can decide how long to stay. It works well as a Todra Gorge tour stop inside a 3 or 4 day desert tour from Marrakech.
Todra Gorge Morocco at a glance
The Todra River (Todgha River) and the neighbouring Dadès River carved the canyons over the last 40 km of their courses through the mountains, according to Wikipedia. The rock is limestone, and the canyons are described as wadis, meaning seasonal river valleys. Sources do not fully agree on the numbers. Wikipedia says the walls reach up to 400 m in places, with the narrowest final section up to 160 m high, while Barceló says up to about 300 m. For the narrowest point, Wikipedia gives about 10 m wide over the last 600 m, and Barceló says about 30 m. Wikipedia’s infobox gives the gorge itself as about 24 km long. We use ranges because the exact figure depends on where you measure.
